Technical problems

Nothing is ever straightforward on a boat.
Todays event was the automatic bilge pump failing. I had a shower and normally this just drains into the bilge and the automatic pump pumps it out into the sea.
Not today.
I could hear the pump going far too long. It was stuck on. Nothing was coming out and the water level in the sump was not going down. I surmised a blockage and lifted it out of the water in the sump so it turned itself off. Otherwise it would have either burnt out or drained our batteries. When Mike came back we spent a couple of hours fiddling with it, trying to unblock the pipe, pouring all sorts down it, trying to blow it through with a foot pump etc etc. All with no joy. There was mess and gunge everywhere. I had already had a shower but needed another one. Mike was lagged. He had his shower whilst I hand pumped the bilge, then grabbed at the towel that was up under the spray hood in the cockpit and tugged it out from under the bowl of prawns that were defrosting for our tea. Bugger. They went everywhere - then swiftly overboard. Much cursing followed by beans on toast.
Oh well, back to the problem tomorrow (sigh).

  1. Bet those storks enjoyed your prawns. Did they follow you? :)
